Sam decided over a month ago that he wanted to have a Super Mario Birthday Party for his 7th birthday. If I’d had any sense, I would have begun collecting things THEN. I went to a few blogs and perused around, but with all the end of school festivities and vacation plans, I put it off until the week before. BIG MISTAKE!
As popular as Mario is, there was not ONE STORE in town that carried the birthday supplies. (I should have ordered them online, but again… I procrastinated.) And none of the bakeries (I didn’t check Freeman’s) close by had Mario Cake kits. So… that meant I had to get my creative juices flowing BIG TIME!!
With a little help from this website, this is what I came up with…
I had already printed simple invitations on plain white card stock and primary colors, with an image of Mario that I downloaded from Google. That was the easy part!
Since I’d had no luck with decorations, I Googled some more, and made this banner. Complete with star lights that I found at our local Hobby Lobby’s 4th of July sale!
Instead of a cake, I decided to do cupcakes decorated like Toad (the mushroom). I placed them on a tiered platter, and put a candle in the one on top. Very simple, but very cute! The cupcake tier made a nice centerpiece on my red & white checked (think Italian pizza place…) table cloth. For table ware, I chose plates, cups, and napkins in blue, red, yellow and green.
Now for games. (All of these are listed on the website I provided above.) I made little signs for each game station I set up in the back yard (again… Google Images!!) and we had a blast playing! As an added bonus, Emilee dressed as Bowser for one of the games – Jakes Idea to use a box taped around his backpack – and volunteered to get blasted with red fireballs (water balloons)!!
Then we came inside for hotdogs, lemonade, cake, and ice cream.
Craft time was definitely a hit! I bought foam visors (red and green) from hobby lobby that we made into Mario and Luigi hats by pasting white foam circles in the middle and drawing the appropriate initial on them. Again, very simple, but the kids LOVED it. I also got some foam star stickers for accents.
Then we opened gifts, and the kids took turns playing MarioKart and Mario Super Slugger on the Wii until the end of the party. As the children left, the got “goodie boxes” decorated like the question blocks in Super Mario.
For one that I literally threw together, I have to say, this was one of our best birthday parties yet!
