Family Night - Spaghetti Western

We had a great time dressing up as cowboys and competing for prizes. Our first competition was a Cowboy Coloring Contest, and each entry won a blue ribbon in it's (age appropriate) category.

Next, we rustled up some grub! I made my Mammy's special spaghetti sauce recipe (it could win a blue ribbon of it own!) and toasted garlic bread. The sauce was a little soupy, and I apologized for that, but Jake said, "Don't worry Mom... I think it is MOST excellent!" ;-)

Then went into the family room for more cowboy games. We played "Sheriff Says" (just like Simon Says, but with a badge...) and "Pin the Badge on the Sherriff". The latter was a bit tricky considering the Sheriff (Dad, this time) was often a moving target! The next game involved wrangling up some doggies (balloons) all the way to the boys' room at the back of the house, using only our feet (horses). Last we played, "There's a Snake in my Boot". For this game, we tossed plastic snakes (and a few other varmints) into a boot. Whoever had the most items in the boot at the end of everyone’s turn, was the winner. Unfortunately, none of us did very well with this one...it ended in a three-way tie of ONE snake each! (Daddy ALMOST had two, but a subsequent toss knocked one of his snakes off the edge!)

For our next activity we headed back to the Chuck Wagon for a family baking event. We made RANGER COOKIES using Grandma Reeder's recipe. (These are KISA’s favorite!!) Everyone pitched in, and we bunches of fun…and made BUNCHES of MESS! But, the cookies were DELICIOUS!

After baking, plans took a bit of a turn. We were supposed to end the night watching Home on the Range, while eating our Ranger Cookies, but that never happened. Daddy got a hold of the “Cowboy Songs” play-list that we'd been using as our soundtrack for the evening. Before long, it changed from Waylon & Willie and the Rhinestone Cowboy, to 80s rock, to a Hip-Hop Dance Party!

Did you know that cowboys could break-dance, and cowgirls could shuffle?

Me neither!

UPDATE: I have to add this little story for good measure. After reading the post aloud to the kids for their approval, Jake said, “Of course cowboys can shuffle!! They play cards a lot!” TOO GOOD not to share!!

You know, Susanne, these posts about family nights are downright inspiring. With the global economy going down the toilet, there will be a lot of people looking for ideas for inexpensive family activities. You need to start posting your "how to's" each week ~ like where you find your ideas, online sources for music or printable colouring pages, etc.

I'm telling you, you've got a great thing going here and I think a lot of people would love to do this kind of thing with their families, but don't know where to start. (speaking for myself, anyway!! ;))
